Sabbaticals & Experiential Holidays in Argentina

Argentina presents a diverse range of wildly beautiful landscapes, from the immense glaciers of Patagonia in the south to the high-altitude deserts of the Puna around Salta in the north. In-between, the mighty Iguazu Falls fringed by tropical rainforest and wetlands, the spectacular snow-capped Andes and sun-kissed Mendoza and its surrounding wine country. And at the heart of it all Buenos Aires, birthplace of the tango, and a whirl of amazing restaurants, dance halls, nightclubs and theatre.

Best Off the Beaten Path experiences in Argentina

    • In the northwest the shimmering white salt flats of Salinas Grandes are otherworldly in their beauty. Nearby are turquoise lakes studded with scarlet flamingos, and a vast lateau of giant cacti; utterly surreal (Parque Nacional de Los Cardones).
    • Kayak across mirror-still Lago Blest then white-water raft down the impossibly blue Rio Manso (Lake District).
    • Learn about Guaraní indigenous culture with local guides in Yacutinga National Park. They’ll take you hiking through the jungle to learn about their medicinal plants.

      Wildlife in Argentina

      • The Valdes Peninsula is home to an enormous colony of elephant seals.
      • Southern Right Whales can be seen here from May to December (breeding, calving and nursing season).
      • Look out for endangered giant otters and giant anteaters, in the subtropical rainforest around Iguazu.
      • Yacutinga Nature Reserve has an incredible diversity of birdlife, including caciques and rare toucan.
      • Visit South America’s only colony of rockhopper penguins near Puerto Deseado.
      • The Ibera Wetlands are a 3-million acre ecosystem of bogs, swamps and lagoons. Capybara and caiman are everywhere; native jaguar are harder to spy.

          When to go to Argentina

Argentina’s seasons are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere. The best time to visit depends on where you’re going; there is not a single time of year when the weather’s great throughout the country! Temperatures range wildly too, between -1C (31°F) and 27°C (82°F). To avoid extreme temperatures aim for: Patagonia and south: November to March Iguazu and northwest: June to August, especially April Buenos Aires and Pampas: September to November, March to May Mendoza: all year Ski season in Bariloche is June to October.

          How to get to Argentina

Most will arrive by air. Argentina’s biggest 2 airports are both in Buenos Aires. Fly directly from the UK, mainland Europe and major US cities (11-16 hours). From here you can take hopper flights to just about anywhere including Bariloche, Mendoza, Salta and Iguazu and El Calafate, or travel overland. Alternatively, the long-distance buses are excellent for domestic or inter-regional travel.

How can I make a difference in Argentina?

Venture far from the tourist trail to Patagonia’s Eastern Atlantic coast and spend time at Bahia Bustamante Lodge. By staying here you’ll support the lodge’s mission to protect this idyllic spot, promote environmental conservation and raise awareness about the protection of this fragile ecosystem. This includes supporting scientists who use Bahia Bustamante as the perfect environment to study the rich wildlife, geology and archaeology of the region. Bahia Bustamante is an IBA (Important Bird & Biodiversity Area), home to 100,000 magellanic penguins in high season (including a penguin breeding site), an important 4000-strong sea lion colony and at least 125 identified bird species, of which two are endemic.
