Sabbaticals & Experiential Holidays in Honduras

The second-biggest Central American country, Honduras is emerging as an exciting destination for adventurous travel and eco-tourism. With a plethora of national parks and biosphere reserves, it brims with wildlife. Huge swathes of pristine cloud forest are home to toucan, quetzal and shy jaguar. Jungle-covered mountains and rugged highlands are lined with coffee farms, banana plantations and mango groves; everywhere you look there is lush, tropical beauty.

Caribbean and Pacific beaches offer palm-lined white sands and turquoise seas. Head to Utila, Roatan and Guanaja for world-class diving. There are Unesco-listed Mayan ruins and quaint cobbled towns, and the sparkling Lago de Yojoa is awash with exotic birdlife. This has all the allure of its busier Latin American neighbours but with a fraction of the visitors. Be one of the first to explore here.

You can travel overland from neighbouring countries Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. If you’re flying here, you’ll likely arrive in San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa or into Roatan Island. How can I make a difference in Honduras?

The La Ceiba-based Adelante Foundation is doing its part to eliminate poverty by providing “micro-credit” loans to extremely poor women in rural Honduras who never before had access to money. The women use the money to start their own micro-businesses. Eventually as the businesses grow, their loan payments increase and over time many can work their way out of poverty. Travel into the backcountry of Honduras with English speaking Adelante staff and attend an “Assembly” which is where potential borrowers meet to learn new business skills and important health or nutrition information. Listen to the challenges faced by these women and support them in their micro-business endeavours. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Adelante Foundation which is a U.S. registered non-profit foundation.
