Zambia is Africa at its most raw and untamed: a land of vast wilderness, breathtaking scenery, and some of the best big-game viewing on the continent. Wildlife in Zambia

Zambia’s national parks provide a sanctuary to some of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife. The Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks all offer extraordinary safari opportunities with some of the best big game viewing on the planet.

  • South Luangwa National Park – One of Africa’s most biodiverse parks, is home to over 60 mammal species and 450 bird species, including leopards, wild dogs, and endemic species like Thornicroft’s giraffe.
  • Lower Zambezi National Park – A haven for wildlife with large herds of elephants, buffalo, impala, leopards and lions. The Zambezi River is teeming with hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds.
  • Kafue National Park – Zambia’s oldest and largest national park, is home to a large variety of mammals, with more species of antelope than any other park in Africa.

When to go to Zambia

The best time to visit Zambia is during the dry season (May to September), when the bush thins, making wildlife easier to spot. During these months, temperatures are comfortable with clear skies, ranging 23°C (73°F) to 9°C (48°F), ideal for walking safaris. During these months water levels at Victoria Falls are low enough for white water rafting and visiting the Devil’s Pool.

Fishing on the lower Zambezi is best from May to October, as water levels start to recede.
