    Best Off the Beaten Path experiences in Cuba

    • The Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás is one of the largest cave formations in South America, with 29 miles of glittering stalactites and stalagmites, underground lakes and vast caverns.
    • Relax on Cayo Jutias’s white sands and snorkel over its colourful reef.
    • Explore Camagüey’s labyrinthine streets and hidden plazas; a Unesco site, it’s less-visited than Havana and Trinidad.
    • Stay in casas particulares for a fascinating insight into family life.
    • Cayo Levisa is postcard perfect: a 3km curve of white sand fringed by the Colorados Archipelago reef, with its black coral.
    • Bike or hike the beautiful Viñales valley, with its rounded mogotes.
    • Hike to El Yunque then swim in waterfall pools.
    • There’s incredible diving along the Zapata peninsula; take a trip from Playa Larga – part of the Bahía de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs).
    • Drive the spectacular south coast road, which runs between the azure sea and the forested Sierra Maestra mountains.

      • There are 21 endemic bird species on the island, including the Cuban tody, Cuban grassquit and Cuban pygmy owl.
      • Turtles lay their eggs on the wild, empty beaches of the Peninsula de Guanahacabibes.
      • Visit the world’s largest flamingo colony in the Rio Maximo Wildlife Reserve.
      • Hummingbirds flit through the lush Vinales valley.





          When to go to Cuba

          The climate is tropical, with fairly stable temperatures. There’s a Dry Season from mid November-mid April and a Rainy Season from late April to early November, but rains are short and sharp, and it’s generally sunny year round. Temperature range between 19°C (26°F) and 25°C (30°F).


          How to get to Cuba

          Sailing into Cuba is possible, but most people arrive by air. Direct flights from London tend to arrive in Havana, though there are charter flights to the smaller international airports. Flight time is around 10 hours. There are no direct flights from the USA to Cuba however good connections from Canada and Europe. There are hopper flights between the main tourist destinations, including Pinar del Rio, Varadero and Caya Largo, Santiago de Cuba and Camaguey. Overland travel is recommended however, either self-drive or private transfers.
