Sabbaticals & Experiential Holidays in South Africa

South Africa has often been described as ‘a world in one country’. Travelling to South Africa is a journey through this world filled with stunning landscapes, wild nature and rich culture. Countless memories are to be made across its grasslands, deserts, mountains, bush, wetlands and subtropical forests.

South Africa’s untamed wilderness has given rise to top game reserves and extensive tracts of land, home to unique animals, birds, plants and insects. Game reserves, such as Kruger, Madikwe, Pilanesberg and KwaZulu-Natal, are home to the Big Five of African wildlife; lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino. Head out for game drives across the bush as you scour the landscape, bumping along the park roads, whilst herds of elephants appear from out the bush and impalas leap across the horizon. Living amidst South Africa’s Garden of Eden will leave any traveller recharged from nature’s tranquillity.

Wildlife in South Africa

South Africa’s biodiversity is extremely diverse. Each protected biosphere is home to creatures not seen elsewhere, and endangered species unique to the region. Game dot the grasslands, and larger mammals move between wooded areas and open spaces. Whales, dolphins, seals and penguins wallow just offshore, or sun themselves on sandy beaches. Desert-adapted species inhabit the drier central parts of the country.

South Africa’s wildlife particularly thrives in its countless National Parks. For example, the Kruger National Park consists of over 2 million hectares of wilderness, filled with numerous species of game and birds. South Africa is famed for the Big 5, with parks such as Sabi Sands being renowned for spotting them all in one day. Even within parks there is great diversity. The north of Kruger consists of Baobab trees, scrubland and rocky outcroppings while the south consists of grasslands and acacia woodlands and hence home to more animals.

When to go to South Africa

While South Africa is an all-year-round destination, the best time to visit is from May to September. This is the dry season where the bush begins to thin and animals concentrate around water sources, improving wildlife viewing. Temperatures range from 25°C to 10°C with clear and bright skies. Fly fishing is exceptionally good with plentiful brown and rainbow trout.

The Cape has beautiful, hot dry summer weather from November to march, ideal for a Cape Town beach holiday with temperatures between 23°C and 26°C.
